This is one of the most popular episodes of the Culinary Edge and it is all due to my Dad. Sometimes you are never sure how people are going to respond when you turn the camera on, especially family members. My Dad is kind of a natural. He is from Brooklyn. Kind of a gregarious Italian guy but I just love the side that came out of him during the episode. And this recipe is a very important part of my growing up.
When I was growing on the Barnegat Bay in New Jersey we would catch the blue claws ourselves. Big ones. There's pictures of me somewhere with my face full of tomato sauce as I was sucking the juices out of those crabs. There's something about eating crabs for me that really brings you closer to the people you are sharing the meal with.
At one point during filming my Dad just started singing Lazy Mary. I didn't tell him to sing and I never heard the song Lou Monte made famous back in the fifties, he just started singing. So I turned the camera on. It's one of my favorite parts of the episode. And everyone needs more cowbell!
