ON THE VIXEN: MUSIC & MARLIN

2/28/2015

This is why I started a cooking show! Because I knew I would end up on adventures like this meeting characters and Captain Kenny Llanes is a character in every sense of the word. Smart, good natured, great musician, great fisherman.

We ended up in Kona and I called a local Captain I knew to see if he knew anybody who wanted to do a show. He said he knew someone. I called the guy and he said, "You want my Uncle, for sure." They knew Captain Kenny would do well on camera. He ended up taking us out, just myself and my girlfriend at the time, for just the gas money. An all day eight hour charter. He told stories about Vietnam, movie stars he'd taken fishing, and his prowess at karaoke. And of course we caught fish.

We caught a marlin as you can see but when I reeled in that Indian short nose spearfish both Kenny and his mate were salivating. The spearfish is an amazing tasting fish. And to cook it over keave really brings out the flavor. This was an epic adventure that I'll never forget.

THE DEVIL'S SLIDE: WILD MUSSELS, SHARK STORIES AND HOME BREW

This was such a fun episode to make because it features a lot of my favorite people Octavian, Todd (my bff), Nate, Ben, and YM. We made this on the last day you could drive on Devil's Slide at a place called Grey Whale Cove Beach just south of Pacifica, CA. It was a bear of an episode bc I was pretty tired when we got back to my apartment to cook the mussels. Plus I have a 3 story walk up so we had to schlep all the stuff down to my tint backyard. The food came out great.

The shark story is true and I still believe it was a baby great white that swam under Nate's board. I'm not talking about a dogfish, I'm talking about a great white!
